How I became a Foster Mom

by Nancy “2009”

ChihuahuaMy oldest daughter decided to adopt a puppy three years ago, Daisy. She is a dog with an awesome personality, is gorgeous and we all love her. She then adopted another little Chi from a private, reputable breeder. When she and her family went for a vacation, she asked me to care for both dogs. How can anyone have two beautiful little Chihuahuas in their home and not fall in love. I was unbearably lonesome when they left. I decided I needed a Chihuahua in my life. I adopted two from a very reputable breeder in New Hampshire. Molly and Mickey were now a part of the family. Later I learned of a family who could not keep their tiny Chihuahua. Their young daughter was rough, and Isabella was very small. Another trip and Izzy came to join the family.

One day in late 2007, I was searching the web for Chihuahuas and came across the name of Yankee Chihuahua Rescue. I checked out the website, felt it was a wonderful way to help the little ones and sent in an application to volunteer. Cheryl came to visit, and I was approved to foster – a great day! Very soon after, I had a tiny little girl and boy to foster. They were soon cuddling in bed with me at night along with my dogs (and my family also includes an 11-year old Shih Tzu).

I started Chihuahuamaking phone calls to families that had applied to adopt. A wonderful couple in Maine seemed like a perfect match! After checking their references, Vet and home visit, they were able to adopted both dogs. I was so sad to see them go but so delighted they had such a wonderful new home. I still correspond with them and receive photos of the obviously well cared for and happy little ones.

I have since done one home visit in my area and saw another little Chihuahua move to a happy forever home.

Soon I had another foster – a 5-year old puppy mill survivor. He loves to turned in circles and to be held. I fell totally in love with him. I adopted him – of course!!!

I am again fostering. Two wonderful and tiny females who will soon be ready for a new home.

ChihuahuaIt is both heart breaking and heart warming when our foster dogs leave but they need permanent and loving homes. However, they never leave us entirely and each takes a piece of our heart when they leave. We help them through a difficult time in their lives and they give us much love in return.

I can say without hesitation that the wonderful little rescue dogs have helped me and my two youngest children who are still at home through some very sad times in the past year when we lost our husband and father. They did sense our sadness and we received many kisses and extra cuddles.
